During an first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” the metropolis, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his term.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.
