No fewer than 13 people perish and 98 wounded in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.
A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its role in national projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a full technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
