Thirty enclosed marine mammals in a Canada-based entertainment facility have been caught in a disagreement between a closed attraction, government authorities and animal rights activists.

But those closest to the whales say the heated debate over their fate often fails to consider the nuances of the whales who, after growing up in confinement, have been carefully observed by the humans who interact with them daily.

After the national authorities disallowed the transfer of the belugas to a foreign facility, the controversial attraction near the famous falls where they are kept warned to put them down unless the government covers the upkeep of their care. The nation’s marine resources official has denied that ultimatum, placing the thirty whales in an dangerously unstable situation.

Highly Cognitive Marine Mammals

Researchers say that beluga whales’ neural makeup, along with their mimicry abilities, problem solving and group interactions point to they are deeply intelligent creatures – something a former trainer discovered directly.

She spent several years as a marine mammal specialist, a role that required gaining confidence of the marine predators.

“Building up those relationships over time takes a lot of regularity and a lot of care. At the beginning, they’re very unsure of you,” she said. “Eventually, you gain shared confidence. And they start being more trusting with you. It’s just so extraordinary and gratifying.”

Burgess knew the whales were very smart, but she says she was even so surprised by the nuances and quirks in their characters. She formed a special affection for a pair of whales with opposing natures.

“Eve selected me. Cleo made me earn it,” she said. “Each changed the way I understand relationships.”

Growing Opposition and Deteriorating Conditions

Burgess’s interaction with the whales evolved against a background of growing public opposition to their captivity.

During her three years at the attraction, multiple belugas and the park’s single killer whale, Kiska, passed away. In all, nineteen belugas have died at the park since 2019, a number which the facility ascribes to expected lifespan, but which advocates say points to the inadequate care in which they were maintained.

The facility did not admit visitors to the public over the summer, but the former trainer says she saw with her own eyes results of the shutdown. “Structural materials is breaking off from the pools because they’re falling apart and not being maintained. The whales are curious and so they take pieces and swim around with chunks in their mouth. It’s distressing to see.”

The facility did not reply to a inquiry, but earlier claimed: “The whales … get far superior veterinary services and constant care than any individual in the United Kingdom, or elsewhere.”

Fate in Limbo and Potential Resolutions

The former employee was dismissed from the park in recent months following the passing of Eos, an unwell beluga the employees had to humanely kill. She said the facility believed particulars of the incident were shared to the news outlets and she was fired not long after.

The uncertainty over the whales’ fate has left Burgess and current and former trainers in despair. She says the park’s warning to kill its whales is a bargaining chip and is a “logistically impossible” endeavor, adding any attempts to humanely kill even a one beluga would require “immense personnel”, equipment and heavy equipment.

“There’s no way in hell the caretakers would ever do it,” she said.

She backs requests for the whales to be transferred right away from the facility, with its crumbling tanks and shrinking team.

In the autumn, the nation’s government official turned down a proposal to transfer the whales to China.

“Allowing the proposal would have meant a perpetual existence in captivity and a return to performance for audiences,” the minister commented. “As the public, we know that marine mammals are meant for the wild, not in tanks for our entertainment. I could not in good conscience authorize an relocation that would continue the conditions these belugas have endured.”

But the former trainer said the official’s statements indicate a broader lack of awareness of the circumstances of life for belugas born in captivity.

“The people needs to understand these are whales that have existed solely in captivity and they will need human care for the remainder of their lives,” she said. “Many just don’t understand that it’s not as simple as saying ‘shut it down’.”

Alternative Habitat and Continuing Discussion

As decision makers work to find a solution, proposals have emerged, some of which have little basis in reality. An idea called for the belugas to be let go into the wilds of Canada’s north – where whales are a primary resource of nourishment for local populations.

A suggested refuge in the region of eastern Canada, which now received official endorsement, has shown to be highly debated. The future location, which includes a large area of enclosed sea water, doesn’t yet exist. Supporters remain hopeful that it could ultimately represent a sustainable resolution for eight of the whales.

But, Burgess says, among staff she’s discussed with, there is “no trust there” about what she said is “only an experiment” in the whales’ fate.

Some experts say the idea of a refuge indicates a broader global shift away from captive facilities and could represent a feasible solution in the coming months.
